The School of Sociology and Social Policy (SSP) is a vibrant, diverse and exciting centre for social science teaching and research. We are a multidisciplinary unit covering criminology, public policy, social policy, social work and sociology.
This role is focused on ensuring we deliver high level professional and administrative support for the SSP’s core operations. This includes working directly with the Head of School to provide effective and high standard professional support.
You will be responsible for coordinating and supporting core operations, e.g. supporting HR processes; purchasing and procurement; facilities; helping the School transition to the University’s new operating system, UniCore. The role holder will also support the Schools’ Postgraduate Research (PGR) community and service key meetings in the School, chaired by members of the School Executive Group.
You will work closely with academic and APM colleagues, but with limited direct supervision and therefore be required to use your initiative, take personal responsibility, think analytically and creatively to solve problems and use excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build and maintain relationships and work collaboratively with academic staff and professional services colleagues across the Faculty and in Central Departments to deliver a high-quality student experience.
You will need excellent communication skills, strong organisational and problem-solving skills, and be a creative thinker who can bring your ideas to life in a fast-paced and varied environment. As someone who can quickly build strong collaborative relationships, you will be a key member of our team.
What can we offer you? A supportive and friendly set of colleagues. Hybrid working arrangements with a blended approach of office and home working each week. As a University employee, you will have an excellent choice of benefits and rewards, including access to fitness and health facilities, staff discount and travel schemes, along with 26 days' holiday allowance (plus additional University closure days) and a highly attractive pension scheme.
This position is available on a fixed term contract for 12 months. Hours of work are part-time (29 hours). Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.
We actively encourage people from racially minoritised backgrounds and those who have protected characteristics to apply; the School is determined to provide a diverse and inclusive environment for staff and students, which draws on the widest possible range of talents and backgrounds.
