The opportunity:

Edinburgh College of Art are seeking to appoint a proactive, organised and administratively efficient individual to join the Student and Academic Support Service (SASS) as a Student Adviser.

Student Advisers provide a first contact point for students within ECA, offering guidance and academic-related support, through sign-posting, to those navigating the University support systems. Much of the support is indirect and administrative, Student Advisers review attendance reports for patterns of low-engagement, check and collate programme handbooks so students have access to clear information, send cohort mailings, and review exam board reports to check on the progress of the 300 students they are named adviser for. They record interactions, decisions and actions, as appropriate, and lead on administrative processes in relation to the student journey such as exceptional circumstances, degree transfers, interruption of studies, course enrolments and progression outcomes.

This role offers the successful candidate an opportunity to join a dynamic team which works to support over 3000 students. Working alongside academic and professional services teams, the role of Student Adviser helps enable students to achieve their potential, as well as ensure a consistent experience for all students on taught programmes.

This post is open ended (permanent) and full-time (35 hours per week). We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • HNC/HND or equivalent; relevant work experience; or broad experience acquired through a combination of job-related training and considerable on-the-job experience
  • Competent IT skills (Microsoft Office) with the ability to use student record systems and perform basic data analysis tasks
  • Demonstrable analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience of working independently with the ability to prioritise workloads in the face of conflicting demands
  • Constructive team player, demonstrating ability to work collaboratively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and active listening skills
  • Ability to understand the need for boundary-setting when working with students
  • Knowledge and understanding of and sensitivity to the complex areas of student wellbeing and support
  • Excellent interpersonal skills - remaining calm under pressure, being able to provide a safe and welcoming space for students in distress
  • Strong commitment to equality and inclusion
