The Programmes Officer sits in the Business Engagement and Research Impact team (BERI) and is responsible for the running and management of a portfolio of institutional funding for research and research impact. This includes management of both internal University of Birmingham funding, as well as funds awarded to the University by strategic funding partners such as Research England.

Reporting to the Programmes Manager (Research Impact), the Programmes Officer manages the internal funding application and award processes, post-award delivery of funded projects, and effective coordination of reporting activity on funded projects. In addition to the administration of funding, the post holder will provide authoritative advice to the University and its Colleges on the appropriate use of the funding, and the management and delivery of impact supported through the funding. The Programmes Officer will also play a pivotal part in supporting and expanding impact and engagement activity across the University by proactively promoting internal funding opportunities and showcasing success stories emerging from funded projects.

Main Duties

  • Provide operational oversight of specific funds within the University’s portfolio of institutional funding, including the design and organisation of various funding schemes, developing and strengthening partnerships with stakeholders, and identifying new opportunities for collaboration to support researchers;
  • Support project planning, communications, and events management for the institutional funds, working with relevant Professional Services teams;
  • Work with academic leads to promote funding schemes, attending and presenting at relevant College and School-level meetings and events as required, in order to support a thriving culture of research and research impact across the University;

Person Specification

  • Undergraduate degree-level or equivalent;
  • Experience of project management in a complex organisation, preferably in an academic setting;
  • Experience of developing research impact, developing research funding bids, and/or delivering post-award support with a client-focused approach;
  • An ability to work independently, and to manage time effectively, progress tasks concurrently, and work under pressure to meet deadlines in a proactive, problem-solving manner;
