About us:

The Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences is seeking to recruit a Senior Technician. This key role will support the Centre for Craniofacial and Regenerative Biology, one of three research Centres within the Faculty.

The Centre for Craniofacial & Regenerative Biology is one of the leading centres for Craniofacial Biology worldwide with research focusing on craniofacial and stem cell biology, innovative approaches to regeneration and repair and big data approaches to understand the complexity of development and disease. Our research spans basic, clinical and translational sciences. It offers a vibrant, collaborative, and interactive research and teaching environment in the heart of London. 

About the role:

The post holder is a member of the Faculty’s professional services team, providing high-quality technical support to the Centre/Faculty and specific support for its education and/or research activities.

The primary purpose of this role will be to provide cell culture support to the Centre and to help maintain the research laboratories in a clean, safe, and tidy manner. Work closely with the Technical Operations Manager and the lead academics to ensure that technical support is professional, well-executed, and timely, complying with university policies and funders’ terms and conditions and adopting best practices.

The post holder is expected to contribute to several technical objectives, including health and safety compliance, training, good laboratory practice, equipment maintenance, maintaining research laboratories and ordering. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic and motivated team player, able to work well with a technical team, willing to explore new innovative approaches and committed to continued personal development.

They will be expected to build relationships with a wide set of stakeholders across academic, technical, finance, health and safety, estates, and facilities directorates to support the research. The appointed person will help manage laboratory facilities and support ongoing research.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post.

About you: (the candidate)

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria 

  1. Degree or equivalent qualification/experience in Biological/Biomedical Sciences.
  2. Experience of molecular and cell biology laboratory techniques (Cell culture, PCR, qPCR).
  3. Ability to trouble-shoot laboratory problems.
  4. Ability to communicate complex technical information and instructions to academics, students and fellow team members in a clear and coherent manner, both orally and in writing.
  5. Proactive and responsive to contacts in immediate area, across the wider organisation and externally (e.g. suppliers) to build relationships and networks.
  6. Good understanding of health&safety legislation in relevant laboratory environment and experience in maintaining compliance.
  7. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and independently to identify and address operational issues.
  8. Ability to advice and train staff and students in laboratory techniques and good laboratory practice and the willingness to improve, learn, and implement new approaches.  

Desirable criteria

  1. Experience of managing numerous cell lines including stem cells and primary cultures.
  2. Professional registration through the Science Council (CSci. RSci. or RSciTech.) or willingness to work towards.
