Are you interested in furthering your career in health and safety? We are looking for a flexible approach individual to work alongside the Head (Technical Services) in the School of Life and Medical Sciences and act as deputy for the management of health safety and School facilities – laboratories, workshops and glasshouses. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience in this area to develop their skills to a higher level. You will be involved in all subject areas in the School.
Main duties and responsibilities
The successful individual will take a lead in health safety and facilities within the School, acting as the deputy to the Head (Technical Services) for these issues. They will play an important role in providing guidance, development and implementation to ensure good governance of Health and Safety and safe working of our facilities. They will be required to provide advice in accordance with UK legislation, UH and LMS Policy and Guidance, health and safety codes of practice and procedures relevant to the subject areas. This will include day to day advice, monitoring and support to staff and students.
Skills and experience required
The successful individual will be expected to have experience of guiding, mentoring and supervising technical staff and students, as well as substantial experience of managing laboratory, or similar, resources. Knowledge of health and safety in a laboratory environment is essential, including an up to date understanding of general health and safety legislation in the UK.
You must have excellent communication skills, able to impart knowledge and expertise to others, highly competent IT skills, as well as the ability to analyse problems and identify practical solutions. Experience of writing Risk and COSHH Assessments, as well as SOPs to a high standard, is also required.
Qualifications required
A Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, eg biosciences, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences and substantial proven experience in a life and medical science area. You must have an IOSH Managing Safely or similar qualification, and a higher qualification, such as NEBOSH General Certificate in Health and Safety Management would be an advantage.
