About the role
The Health and Safety Team supports the University of Sussex in delivering a safe working environment for over 2000 staff and 16000 students on the Falmer Campus (over 200 acres) and a range of off-site locations. The Health and Safety Team’s key purpose is to promote and improve the safety culture within key areas of the University.
As the Assistant Health and Safety Advisor, you will support the team in promoting this positive safety culture at the University and support the wider Health and Safety Team in delivering services to a range of schools and divisions.
As a 10-month fixed term contract with possibility for extension (to cover a sabbatical within the Health and Safety team), this is an ideal opportunity for existing health and safety professionals looking to develop and expand their experience, or for someone with a demonstrable interest in health and safety that are looking to build a career in the sector.
About you
You will hold the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health (or be working towards this) or have an equivalent qualification and experience. As you will be working across Faculties which include science-based Schools, a degree level qualification in a science based subject, or demonstrable experience in a similar role is desirable, but not essential.
You will have the know-how to advise on a wide range of ‘general’ health and safety issues, with support from the wider Health and Safety Team and be confident in applying this to a large organisation. Understanding higher education institutions is desirable but not essential.
You will be an excellent communicator, able to build a rapport with a wide range of staff at all levels of the university and its students. You are engaged, show initiative and are happy to take on a variety of different tasks either working on your own or with the team.
