Are you passionate about student wellbeing and keen to make a difference in higher education? The Royal College of Art is seeking a Senior Student Caseworker to join our dedicated Student Support Team. In this pivotal role, you will provide expert, responsive, and compassionate support to students navigating complex and challenging circumstances, ensuring they are able to thrive academically and personally.  This is a fixed term role (initially up to 8 months) and offered at 0.8 – 1 FTE.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Student Support: Offer individualised welfare support to students facing complex circumstances, providing guidance and mentorship to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.
  • Crisis Response: Assist in responding to student crises with a flexible and proactive approach, managing risk in partnership with appropriate internal and external services.
  • Collaborative Working: Build strong working relationships with academic departments and professional services to ensure tailored adjustments and support for students, especially those experiencing mental health difficulties.
  • Training and Guidance: Provide expertise, training, and support to staff in managing student mental health concerns and fostering a positive, inclusive environment.
  • Holistic Coordination: Work closely with colleagues, including the Counselling Manager, Disability Adviser, and Senior Support Adviser, to deliver a seamless, professional, and well-coordinated student support service.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Lead on initiatives and events promoting health and wellbeing within the College, contributing to the broader student experience.
  • Service Development: Proactively review and refine support processes, promoting feedback-driven improvements to ensure high-quality service delivery.

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in Higher Education: Demonstrated experience working in student support services in a higher education setting.
  • Crisis Management Expertise: Experience in crisis management and risk assessment for individuals with mental health concerns.
  • Collaborative Teamwork: Highly effective team player, able to work collaboratively across departments and services with individuals who may not have experience with mental health support.
  • Cultural Awareness: Sensitivity to cultural differences in approaches to mental health and wellbeing.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage diplomatically and professionally with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Organisational Skills: Strong organisational abilities, including managing records and processes efficiently.
  • Resilience and Flexibility: Personal resilience and the ability to work effectively under pressure and in evolving situations.
  • Problem-Solving Approach: Initiative to develop new services that align with and enhance existing support frameworks.
  • Partnership Development: Experience working with external statutory and voluntary health and mental health services.
