About Us

The purpose of the role is to support the administration of processes linked to the lifecycle of research grants, from application to final reporting for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Working closely with principal investigators and as directed by the Research Operations Manager (Grants), the postholder will be provide support for all externally funded research grant activity. The postholder will liaise with Research, Management & Innovation Directorate (RMID) staff and other College Research Management teams, Finance, HR and other central service providers to ensure effective delivery of a seamless research grant support service.     

About The Role

Pre-award support:  

  • Respond to routine queries regarding applications.  
  • Create accurate costing of research grant applications as advised by the Research Operations Manager (Grants).  
  • Maintain accurate internal records of grant applications and their outcome.  
  • Maintain and ensure that electronic and email records of the live portfolio are kept up to date.  
  • Attend regular meetings with Principal Investigators and Programme Managers to support the preparation of funding proposals for their respective research groups and status of award contracts.  
  • Assist in the arrangement of meetings, panel reviews and training events.  

Post-award administration:  

  • Undertake the internal and external administrative tasks associated with the acceptance of research grants on behalf of the Principal Investigator.  
  • Liaise with RMID to ensure set up of research related contracts (collaborative agreements, subsequent amendments etc).  
  • Monitor grant expenditure and advise the PI on any over or under spend.  
  • Support where appropriate any finance or HR related tasks in relation to a grant, including recruitment and provision of interim budget reviews.  
  • Ensure all database information is maintained and up to date with a high attention to detail.  

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • Ability to manage time effectively, work flexibly and prioritise workload. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels. 
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills and the ability to work to competing deadlines. 
  • High degree of numeracy. 
  • Experience in general and financial administration. 

Desirable criteria

  • An understanding of grant application processes including costing and funder guidelines.

  • Experience of relevant research administration or project management experience in a similar or related role. 
  • Ability to track budgets and prepare reports in line with requirements. 
  • Experience in delivering a customer focussed service.
