We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.
Job description:
Newcastle University is one of the UK’s great civic, research-intensive Universities. We are home to a diverse community of 29,000 students and more than 6,000 staff from 145 countries. We deliver world-leading research, spanning a wide range of activities with a strategy to address major global societal challenges, including ageing and health; data; energy; cities; and culture and the creative arts. Sitting in the heart of Newcastle city centre, with presence in Malaysia and Singapore, we are ranked top 30 in the UK in the 2025 Times/Sunday Times rankings and top 130 in the world in the 2025 global QS rankings.
The University is looking to appoint a new Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS). This role reports to the Vice-Chancellor and leads one of the largest health faculties in the UK with around 8,300 students, 2,100 staff and a turnover of £230m. In FMS we educate for life, nurturing the next generation of practitioners, clinicians, scientists and educationalists. Ranked 80 globally for Medicine (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025), FMS’s mission is to create a world in which we all live better, for longer. Our expertise spans understanding rare diseases to multi-morbidity and ageing, all with a focus on improving health and wellbeing for all. Research is at the heart of what we do and how we educate students. We are home to the National Innovation Centre for Ageing; the development of the UK’s first Health Innovation Neighbourhood; and the world’s biggest study into non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. NUMed Malaysia is our purpose-built campus delivering identical programmes of study to our UK-based provision in medical and biomedical sciences in Southeast Asia.
As well as providing leadership of the Faculty, the Pro Vice-Chancellor will play an important wider leadership role, with colleagues on the University Executive Board, adopting a collaborative and integrated approach to delivering University -wide success. This is a role for an inspirational leader who can lead, shape, and fulfil the agenda of the Faculty. You will demonstrate an outstanding reputation in research in one of the Faculty’s disciplines, a commitment to excellent education, proven leadership and management credentials and the vision and capability to enhance the Faculty’s performance. You will bring connectivity to research funders and industry and a strong ability to engage outside academia as well as across disciplines.
You will share our commitment to Equality Diversity and Inclusion and demonstrate this through leadership and actions. Newcastle is an inclusive community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We welcome and encourage applications from candidates from all backgrounds with the qualifications and experience to undertake this role, including under-represented groups.
