The Role
The Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Chemical Labs Technician.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of technical staff supporting the research activities in the School of Natural & Environmental Sciences, through the provision of technical support within the chemical research labs, and in support of technical services within the Bedson Building.

You will support the Chemical Research Labs Team Leader in the management of the chemical research facilities and infrastructure by:

  • Helping to manage shared laboratory areas, to allow users to work safely in a cohesive and collaborative environment.
  • Working with facility users to ensure equipment is working safely and work to ensure items are repaired and tested to statutory and local requirements.
  • Working with the team to help manage and run the chemistry stores, as well as the disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Helping to manage the training and provision of gases and cryogens to the facility users and ensure systems are working safely.

The post holder will be:

  • Capable of training and advising lab users on safe techniques and will work with users to ensure they are working safely and effectively.
  • Confident and competent with Health and Safety management.
  • Capable of conducting their own experiments when required in line with teaching requirements and active research projects.

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual, with technical/research experience and excellent organisational skills.

The candidate must have:

  • Experience in relevant laboratory environments with good understanding of synthetic techniques.
  • A good understanding of health and safety, and excellent team-working and communication skills.
  • Experience in use of gas systems and anaerobic techniques.
  • The ability to work autonomously and prioritise their tasks based on lab users’ needs as well as team requirements.
  • The ability to respond to unknown risks in a logical and calm manner, ensuring those around are safe and risks mitigated as best as possible.
  • Excellent communication skills and understand the importance of altering information levels based on recipient.

The position is full-time, and offered on an open-ended (permanent) basis.
