The University of Cambridge Language Centre is seeking to recruit a full time Web based Learning Systems Technician, starting in February 2025.
The Web Based Learning Systems Technician is a key member of the eLearning team, which is responsible for the technical and visual design, implementation and maintenance of a wide range of online learning resources. This role supports the university's digital strategy by creating and maintaining web-based solutions that enhance the learning experience for students and staff within the Language Centre. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with educators, instructional designers, and other technical staff to deliver high-quality digital content and services.
The role holder will take responsibility for providing expertise in web development and IT services across the centre. The role involves developing and maintaining high-performance, accessible websites, using front-end and back-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and relevant frameworks. The successful candidate will optimise websites for usability and performance and manage code repositories through version control systems. In addition to web development, the role includes providing first-line IT support, troubleshooting technical issues, and offering guidance to staff on IT-related matters. A solid working knowledge of Microsoft operating systems, Mac OS, iOS, and Android is essential, alongside experience in networking and hardware support. Strong communication skills are vital, as you will collaborate with team members and explain technical concepts to non-technical staff.
Educated to HND level or equivalent, or with equivalent practical experience you will have demonstrable experience working in IT and the ability to manage and prioritise tasks effectively. A degree level in Computer Science, Web Development would be desirable.
The Language Centre is an institution within the School of Arts and Humanities, but provides language learning opportunities for all members of the University, both students and staff, through a combination of taught courses in some 18 languages, guided self-study, as well as a programme of academic development and training for international students. The Language Centre houses an open access learning centre (the John Trim Centre) open to all and develops and publishes its own online learning resources.
Applicants are encouraged to provide a link to their portfolio or examples of previous work that demonstrate proficiency in Python (Django), CSS3 (including frameworks such as Tailwind and Bootstrap), and JavaScript/TypeScript. Experience with modern front-end frameworks like React or Vue.js would be advantageous.
As this role includes providing technical support, on rare occasions, the successful candidate may be required to work late to ensure smooth operation of technical systems.
