Background and Duties

Lady Margaret Hall has two Tutorial Fellows in Physics: Professor Gianluca Gregori, who has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant and a UKRI Prosperity Partnership Grant and the senior Fellow, Professor Todd Huffman who works in the field of high energy particle physics. Professor Niranjan Thatte, Professor of Astrophysics in the Department is a Senior Research Fellow and a College Stipendiary Lecturer.

There is an average intake of 6 students reading Physics at LMH per year.

In addition to teaching, the Lecturer(s) will be expected to help with related administrative duties and pastoral duties. These will include serving as Personal Tutor to undergraduates, helping to organise their tuition, to monitor their progress and to provide general pastoral support. The post will also involve the setting and marking of collections (termly college examinations) and completing tutorial reports on the Tutorial Management System. The postholder may be invited to act as “graduate adviser” to a small number of students.

The Lecturer(s) will also take part in the annual undergraduate admissions exercise in December, which includes shortlisting and interviewing applicants. Training in admissions interviewing is required, and will be provided. The Lecturer(s) will be encouraged to participate in recruitment and access initiatives relating to Physics, (e.g. Open Days and Taster Days in the College) and in the social events with students which are funded by the College. It is hoped that the Lecturer(s) will participate in the life of the College. The appointment carries with it membership of the College’s Education Committee, which meets once a term.

The successful applicant will

  • Have a completed PhD in Physics or a related discipline.
  • Have the ability to be an effective and inspiring teacher in the tutorial context. Some direct experience of tutorial teaching would be an advantage.
  • Have the ability to teach Atomic and Laser Physics as well as Condensed Matter Physics.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of high achieving undergraduates, and a commitment to fostering high academic achievement in undergraduates.
  • Have a high level of academic achievement (commensurate with the candidate’s career stage).
  • Good communication skills, and sensitivity to deal effectively with pastoral duties.
  • An enthusiasm for involvement with the wider life of the College and the potential to contribute to the intellectual community.

Salary will be on the Senior Tutors’ scale for Stipendiary Lecturers, (£17,491 to £18,308 per annum for 6 hours at current 2024/25 rates). You will also have access to a number of generous benefits.
