Job Summary

The post holder will be responsible for providing day-to-day support in the implementation of the University’s priorities relating to Education and the wider Student Experience. This will include project management and oversight for projects and workstreams within broader programmes (in particular related to the University’s Access and Participation Plan (APP) and Class of 2030 strategic initiative), as well as supporting members of staff from across the University who will be leading these initiatives.  The post holder will manage budgets including forecasting and financial reporting.  They will oversee the delivery of residential activities related to APP commitments and will be expected to engage in occasional evening, weekend and overnight working as required.

The post holder will be heavily involved in stakeholder engagement, working with academic and support departments, actively developing personal relationships within areas of the university currently under-represented in Education Office initiatives. They will need the ability to establish and develop strong working relationships with senior professional and academic staff as well as the students’ union, and the broader student body.

The post holder will be expected to be autonomous in decision-making in relation to areas within their remit and to take on a senior role in project conception, development and implementation.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage the design and delivery of the University’s commitments in its APP to support students from widening participation backgrounds in their transition to the university, and related initiatives while studying.
  • Ensure that learning, teaching, and student voices are represented throughout the development and lifecycle of strategies, initiatives, and projects.
  • Directly line manage a small team of staff members, providing developmental support as required, and coordinate work plans for with other colleagues as appropriate.
  • Occasional overnight working at residential events.

Essential requirements

  • An undergraduate bachelors degree with honours ideally in a subject area taught by the University, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of managing projects in a higher education environment working with a range of stakeholders.
  • Experience of working to support the widening access and participation agenda, ideally within a HE setting.
  • Experience of working in diverse project teams
  • Understanding of learning, teaching and wider student experience in higher education and the academic environment, particularly within the subject areas taught by the University.
  • Understanding of the wider (non-educational) student experience aspects of higher education.
  • Experience of running residential events for young people.
  • A clear understanding of the need to influence and to build strong, positive working relationships.
  • Understanding of working within the parameters of safeguarding policies, including procedures and processes for escalation.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently, with use of initiative and a positive approach to identify key issues and manage own workload.
  • Oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely, give positive input to discussion at meetings and write reports, communications and papers for publication.
  • The skills to line-manage staff and support their personal and professional development.
  • Ability to work under pressure, with little direct supervision, to tight deadlines and to adapt to changing situations in a considered and calm manner.
