Finance Assistant (Part Time, Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge - Sainsbury Laboratory

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £26,642 to £30,505 pro rata
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 21st November 2024
Closes: 8th December 2024
Job Ref: PT44149

The Sainsbury Laboratory is a scientific research institute which focuses on plant developmental biology and computational modelling of plant development. It accommodates around 150 researchers and 30 professional staff.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Finance Assistant to join our friendly Finance team.  With day-to-day supervision from the Finance Coordinator, the postholder will undertake the administration of accounts and maintain financial records to contribute to the management of our Departmental finances. They will assist in the provision of a largely autonomous accounting and purchasing service responsible for processing about 4,000 invoices each year. The postholder will undertake cash management, journal transfers, and run various accounting reports.

Candidates should be educated to A-Level standard or equivalent, with GCSEs in English and Mathematics. A relevant accountancy qualification such as AAT Level 2 (or working towards) is desirable.

Previous experience working in a busy accounts office, ideally in a large academic organisation, would be an advantage but is not essential. Knowledge of the Cambridge University Finance System or experience of other Oracle-based accounting packages would be desirable too, however, what matters most is your willingness to learn and a proactive attitude.

The successful candidate needs to demonstrate a reasonable understanding of facts, principles, processes, and general concepts related to Finance/Accounts administration. Familiarity with Microsoft Office packages, in particular Excel, would be beneficial too.

You must have excellent interpersonal, communication, and organisational skills, with a positive, service-oriented attitude. You should be able to work independently as well as in a team and have a pro-active approach to problem solving. Attention to detail, a high level of accuracy and effective time management are essential.

This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in finance administration within a supportive environment. If you are keen to build a solid foundation in accounts and contribute to our team, we would love to hear from you!

We are looking for individuals who wish to work part-time (around 2.5 to 3 days per week) and we are open to flexible hours to meet personal or family needs.

Interviews are expected to take place on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 December 2024.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 December 2026 in the first instance.
