Research Fellow - AR3060RS

University of St Andrews - School of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Location: St Andrews
Salary: £37,999 to £45,163 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 4th November 2024
Closes: 2nd December 2024
Job Ref: 441121

Start date: ASAP

We are loking for a Post-doctoral Researcher to join our UKRI (NERC) funded project “Figuring Out how to Reconstruct Common Era forcing of climate by VOLcanoes with novel data and modelling approaches (FORCE-VOL)”. This exciting opportunity is part of a collaborative project working with colleagues at the University of Oslo and the British Antarctic Survey to improve our records of volcanic forcing of climate. Specifically, the Post-doctoral Researcher will design experiments and run state-of-the-art aerosol chemistry-climate model simulations of volcanic eruptions, and analyse the model output. A particular focus of this project is to understand how volcanic eruption parameters impact the sulfate flux to polar ice sheets, with a view to improving the calibration of past volcanic forcing of climate from records of sulfate from ice cores.

The successful applicant will have (or be near to completion of) a PhD in physical, mathematical, or Earth sciences with expertise in climate modelling. Strong candidates will have technical skill in data analysis and/or computational modelling, and a strong background in atmospheric and climate science. The postdoctoral researcher would join a dynamic cohort of researchers within the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences.

The post is available for 2.5 years starting January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Informal enquiries can be directed to Prof Andrea Burke (ab276@st-andrews.ac.uk), Dr Lauren Marshall (dr.marshall.lauren@gmail.com), or Prof Kirsten Krüger
