Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the city and we currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research Integrity and Ethics Officer to join our Research Office working in the Research Excellence team. 

Research conducted by our academic staff and PGR students, both externally funded and internally funded, is increasingly addressing societal challenges of all forms, which is commonly collaborative and frequently involves the use of human participants and their personal data. There is, therefore, a requirement to ensure a growing proportion of our research is subject to an appropriate ethical review and that regular monitoring of the conduct of such research is undertaken. 

The Research Integrity and Ethics Officer (RIEO) take a cross-university lead on the implementation of common systems and processes to ensure research integrity and the effective and efficient administration of research ethical approval in our faculties, to ensure these are fit for purpose; comply with the relevant discipline norms and meet the expectation of research funders and external bodies that require ethical approval of research. The RIEO provide a key point of contact for advice and guidance in the use of the software system selected for automating the management of research ethics applications approvals. 

The Research Integrity and Ethics Officer role will suit applicants who have experience implementing and administering software systems and for managing research ethics approval workflows. You will be part of the RX team and will work closely with faculty ethic committees to assess outgoing research to ensure outputs meet ethical standards. This includes ensuring projects mitigate any risk, that the research is justified and that research activities meet all necessary guidance set out by the government.

You will be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the key principles of research integrity and research ethics and have prior experience of supporting the administration of research ethics approvals processes in Higher Education, public sector, NHS or related areas. Evidence of effective co-working with support staff and professional services functions to support research and researchers is required. A commitment to delivering a high standard of professional services to academic staff and research students is essential.

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so, and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
