An exciting opportunity exists to join Careers Network (CN) at The University of Birmingham as a Mentoring Programmes Lead.

As part of the External Engagement team, you will possess strong relationship management skills and will work collaboratively both internally across the institution and externally, including internationally, to deliver an excellent mentoring service to all our students and recent graduates. 

Leading a small team you will be responsible for all aspects of recruitment, matching, monitoring, evaluating and impact measurement, utilising both existing and new online processes.  This includes the Alumni Leadership Mentoring Programme, the Careers Network Mentoring scheme which also offers bespoke mentoring support to LGBTQ+ students, business start-up students and students from international and widening participation backgrounds.

The purpose of this role is to strategically and operationally lead on all stages of our Mentoring Programmes and to continue to effectively grow the number of high-quality mentoring relationships to reach students who need insight and support from an industry professional mentor. A key element to the role will be to support the project management of the next phase in mentoring processes working both internally and externally, to increase student and graduate engagement.

Main duties

Reporting to the Head of Programmes in CN, the Mentoring Programme Lead will deliver the following objectives:

  • To provide a high quality, efficient and effective mentoring service to students and recent graduates that adheres to all aspects of recruitment, matching, monitoring, evaluating and impact measurement, utilising both existing processes and new online processes.
  • To increase the number of mentoring relationships working closely with colleagues internally e.g. the Development & Alumni Relations Office (DARO) and externally e.g. external alumni and employers.
  • To enable students and graduates to network and develop long-term mentoring relationships based on criteria such as career area and work location. This will include students and graduates from all backgrounds and nationalities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) plus relevant practical experience - where no equivalent qualification is held significant practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of progressively more demanding roles will be required.
  • Evidence of literacy and numeracy, with the ability to write clearly, and to produce and analyse information and data.
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day-to-day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
  • A good understanding of Higher Education and the issues impacting on student employability
  • Excellent relationship building and stakeholder management skills and the ability to adapt to a diverse range of stakeholder groups
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • High level of attention to detail
