Background

We have ambitious plans to build on our successful REF2021 outcome, by aiming to be recognised as one of the world’s top 50 institutions by 2030. We are working towards this by enhancing our research performance across awards, outputs, income, and impact. The Research Strategy & Services Division (RSSD) has been formed as a key enabler of our Birmingham 2030 ambitions. Our teams are dedicated to support all of our researchers to achieve their full potential, and this includes supporting international research projects. At the core of this endeavour lies the Trusted Research Manager (TRM) role, supporting the consistent application of regulatory compliance and funder terms.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director RSSD (Head of Contracts Policy & Compliance), the TRM will develop a consistent framework for regulatory compliance, support training and development in Trusted Research, and ensure a robust control environment for research regulatory matters. This new role offers the opportunity to shape and drive the next stage of our Trusted Research strategy, fostering a proactive approach to managing risks associated with international collaborations.

You will develop and implement an internal framework for the Trusted Research agenda, review queries related to Export Control, support referrals, and draft export licence applications, and provide advice on Trusted Research matters to Professional Services and Academic colleagues.

In the RSSD, we are committed to supporting the career development of our people, and you will have the opportunity to engage in training and development, and to develop strong networks across the sector. If you join is, you will be part of a forward-thinking team at a university that values diversity, innovation, and collaboration.

Person Specification

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) plus relevant practical experience – where no equivalent qualification is held substantial practical relevant experience and expertise in a series of progressively more demanding roles will be required.
  • Experience of providing support to complex issues, with an ability to disseminate that expertise to others to ensure understanding and compliance at all levels of the University.
  • Proven ability to write clearly for a variety of audiences, and to produce and analyse source material, information and data.
  • Knowledge of the geopolitical issues impacting the UK and/or overseas research funding environment, including broader sector/commercial awareness.
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills, with proven experience of managing complex processes and engaging with peers and staff who are not direct reports.
  • Excellent analytical skills with an ability to analyse complex qualitative and quantitative information and present conclusions clearly and concisely.
  • Judgement and proven problem-solving skills that will help to identify and implement improvements and efficiencies across the service area and beyond.
