Be a part of something amazing...

As the principal museum of the University of Cambridge and the largest cultural venue in the region, The Fitzwilliam Museum acts as a crucial bridge between the University, the City and the rest of the world, and has an international reputation for extraordinary research, world class exhibitions, award-winning public programmes and significant collections spanning many cultures and centuries. The Hamilton Kerr Institute (HKI) is one of the world's leading centres for teaching and research in conservation and heritage science.

The Fitzwilliam Museum houses, curates and displays the art collections of the University of Cambridge. The Registrar's Office, within the Collections & Research Division, oversees the administration of the loan of artworks into and out of the Museum, from the Museum's collections as well as those of private lenders, long-term loans or temporary loans for exhibitions, and has responsibility for the logistics of the movement of artworks, transport arrangements, insurance and government indemnity cover.

The Assistant Registrar post fulfils a key role within this team and in the wider, outward-facing functions of the Museum. They handle caseloads of outgoing and incoming loans, working with colleagues in Collections Management, Exhibitions, Curatorial and Conservation teams, and with borrowers and transport agents. In addition, the role supports the auditing and management of long-term loans in and out. The postholder will need to work effectively with staff, researchers, suppliers and contractors.

We are seeking someone confident in the legal framework of lending and wider collections managements, fine art and insurance and indemnity schemes. In addition, someone who has the ability to plan, co-ordinate and manage effectively multiple loan projects and competing priorities at one time. In return, we offer an encouraging and supportive environment, an attractive pension scheme, generous holiday allowance and many employee benefits such as a shopping discounts scheme.

To help support our staff to thrive both professionally and personally, we have adopted a system of hybrid working, meaning staff are empowered to split their time between in-person collaboration and remote working. The frequency of remote working will be subject to discussion with your line manager.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 22 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check and a security check.
