Job summary

Would you like to help railways from around the globe learn from each other to improve the service they deliver to customers?  If so, this is an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Managing Associate/Project Manager (equivalent to ‘Associate’ level in transport planning/consultancy) here at the Transport Strategy Centre (TSC) Imperial College London. The successful applicant will join a globally recognised applied research and consultancy group, focused on public transport. The TSC works with over 130 providers of public transport globally. We are a growing, multidisciplinary team combining people from industry, consultancy and academic backgrounds.  

Duties and responsibilities

You will provide senior support for Associate Directors in the management and leadership of benchmarking consortia and other related projects with a focus on rail (primarily passenger railways). Responsibilities will include technical leadership of best practice case studies and key performance indicators, conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis and reporting findings to senior industry clients as well as more general project management and client liaison. The role requires a high level of knowledge and experience of railways and project and client management skills.

Essential requirements

  • A strong undergraduate degree or equivalent demonstrable experience in a discipline with a significant numerate and transport content such as Transport, Civil Engineering, Geography, Economics, Urban Planning, or a related field.
  • An excellent understanding of railways and the wider public transport industry, particularly within the context of strategy, operations, planning and/or engineering (or similar), preferably in the passenger sector.
  • Experience with working in the railway, including consultancies, transport operators, authorities, or government institutions) in a role that involves comparative analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Experience with using benchmarking and/or performance metrics to understand railway and public transit performance.
  • Detailed knowledge of railway engineering, operations and management methods, processes and/or management.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills with an ability to draw conclusions from information and datasets.
  • Good interpersonal and collaboration skills, including proven competence in working in project teams and interacting well with professionals at all levels.
  • Proven project management skills, including setting work programmes and budgets and managing projects to deliver high-quality work in accordance with these.
