The Departments of Pathology and Biochemistry are two of the largest Department within the School of Biological Sciences with diverse cutting-edge research into infectious diseases, the immune system, cancer, cell biology and biomolecular interactions. The Department of Pathology is home to the Pathogen Cryo-Imaging Facility in Cambridge (PaCIFiC), which houses a new state-of-the-art cryo-confocal microscope. The Department of Biochemistry boasts a cutting-edge Cryo Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) Facility, featuring top-tier equipment such as the Talos Arctica 200 kV and Titan Krios 300 kV electron microscopes, collectively valued at approximately £6.3 million. Additionally, the facility offers a range of associated equipment for cryo-EM grids preparation, Cryo-EM data processing, and analysis.
We seek an enthusiastic and talented individual to manage and develop the PaCIFiC cryo-imaging facility, and to contribute to running of the Cryo-EM facility. This is a joint appointment between Departments of Pathology and Biochemistry, and the role holder will split their time 50/50 between PaCIFiC and the Cryo-EM Facility. The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting users of the facilities to prepare samples for cryo-confocal imaging and cryo-EM single particle analysis, acquire images and analyse data across both imaging modalities, and work with infectious samples at containment level 2. They will accelerate the cutting-edge research in both facilities by working closely with the user community to help design, execute and interpret experiments, and there will be opportunities for development of new imaging and analysis workflows.
The role holder is expected to be able to work with diverse research groups within the Department and across the wider School of Biological Sciences to facilitate a wide variety of imaging experiments. They will be expected to co-ordinate use and maintenance of the equipment as well as help drive new funding bids to expand and improve the imaging technology within the facilities.
Candidates should possess a biological-sciences related background with extensive experience in fluorescence microscopy techniques and cryo-EM single particle analysis. A track record in preparing and imaging cryo-preserved cells would be advantageous, as would prior experience working in Containment Level 2 facilities.
Fixed-term: for 2 years in the first instance, with possibility of renewal subject to successful facility review.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.
