An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant to contribute to a Wellcome Trust-funded Discovery award investigating the sexual development of the malaria parasites Plasmodium berghei and Plasmodium knowlesi.
The award is a collaborative venture between the Glasgow Laboratory and those of Dr.z Rob Moon, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Prof Yee Ling Lau I Um of the Universiti Malaya. Specifically, the postholder will provide additional data for a project underway in the laboratory: Characterisation and functional analyses of the role of post translational modifications of the master regulator of commitment to sexual development, the transcription factor AP2-G.
Preliminary data demonstrates that acetylation of a critical lysine residue in the DNA binding domain regulates the ability of the protein to be functional in P. berghei. The project involves taking these preliminary data to understand the role of AP2-G acetylation in sexual development.
This study will be expanded to a consideration of the same question in the zoonotic parasite P. knowlesi as well as helping in collaboration to re-establish sexual development in this parasite through correction of identified genome defects.
Postholder will be working in the Parasitology research area within the School of Infection and Immunity under the supervision of Professor Andy Waters [Principal Investigator]. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications.
This post is full time and has funding until 31st December 2027.
