The School of Geographical & Earth Sciences is looking for a Research Associate in Fluvial Geomorphology to a “Project PAMANA: Philippine Mining at the National to Catchment Scale: from Legacy Impacts to Sustainable Futures (working with Dr. Richard Williams (Principal Investigator) and Prof Cecilia Tortajada (Co-Investigator) at the University of Glasgow. The project is a 3.5-year study (2021-2025) co-funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST). PAMANA aims to provide a holistic understanding of the legacy, present and future environmental and ecological impacts of mining on Philippine river systems, and lay the foundations for a novel catchment monitoring and management infrastructure that informs sustainable mining practice. This project is now in its last year (project end date is end of May 2025). Depending on the candidate’s skills, the candidate will contribute to the analysis and publication of data on fluvial geomorphology, cosmogenic nuclides, sediment geochemistry and/or river management policy and practice. PAMANA is a collaboration between five UK universities (University of Glasgow – lead; Liverpool John Moores University; University of Hull; University of Exeter; Brunel University London) and four Philippine universities (UP Los Banos; UP Diliman; Caraga State University; University of Southeastern Philippines). As part of this project, you will work closely with six other research associates (three in the Philippines and three in the UK). The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications, knowledge exchange activities and research proposals, as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.
