We are excited to announce an opening for a Demonstrator in Natural Sciences at Birkbeck, a renowned institution in the heart of Central London.
As part of the Faculty of Science, School of Natural Sciences, this is an excellent opportunity to support the teaching team in delivering Undergraduate teaching across Earth and Planetary modules.
You will assist in the delivery of predetermined programmes of teaching to Birkbeck Natural Science students, under academic supervision, to facilitate the successful completion of their studies. You should engage in the scholarship necessary to ensure good practice in teaching and to apply appropriate levels of knowledge in the subject areas to be taught.
You will support modules (not exclusive to):
Comets, Asteroids and Meteorites - a Level 6 module for the BSc Planetary Science with Astronomy degree. One of the main pieces of assessed work requires the students to investigate an unclassified meteorite in thin section. The Demonstrator must have experience in mineral identification by optical microscope, and in using the Electron Microprobe at Birkbeck, and be able to explain how to use the resulting data to determine the classification of the meteorite.
Planetary Interiors - a Level 6 module for the BSc Planetary Science with Astronomy degree and optional for BSc Geology. The module covers the formation, evolution and deep structure of the terrestrial planets, with a focus on geophysical and geochemical evidence. Assessment includes the design and implementation of a project examining Mars' structure and composition. The Demonstrator must have some understanding of the concepts involved (or must be able and willing to learn these) and must show initiative and confidence in helping students, including with technical and mathematical questions.
Other modules not listed may require support so if you have expertise in a related field please make an application if you would like to be considered in future.
Please specify on your statement which module or area you would like to be considered for or if you would like to be considered for several positions across a range of topics.
As a Demonstrator, you will:
