Job Summary

A Research Associate is required to work in the Endocrinology Section of the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction based at the Hammersmith Hospital Campus. The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust and other funding streams to work within a multidisciplinary team under the supervision of Dr Ben Jones. The post has a broad remit but will primarily focus on understanding factors that influence G protein-coupled receptor signalling in obesity and type 2 diabetes. The laboratory and research team form a diverse and welcoming environment, and the post holder will be encouraged and supported to publish and present their work and to carry out career development activities.   

Duties and responsibilities 

The post holder will assist with directing the work of small research teams and take the initiative in the planning and execution of research studies and will be expected to develop, optimise and perform methods for multiplexed analysis of receptor coding variants using deep mutational scanning and also perform in vitro biochemical and imaging-based assays to assess GPCR signalling and trafficking responses. The post holder will ensure the validity and reliability of data and maintain accurate and complete records of findings, with which they will write reports for submission to research sponsors.

Essential requirements

  • Applicants must have a PhD with a strong focus on G protein-coupled receptor pharmacology/biology or a related subject. (Candidates who have not yet been awarded their PhD but have sat the Viva will be considered). 
  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals are essential. 
  • Knowledge and research experience of membrane receptor-focussed in vitro molecular pharmacology and molecular biology studies; advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques; application of coding/bioinformatic approaches (e.g. R, Python) and in vivo work are all required. 
  • Experience in teaching and training of students to conduct experimental work is also essential. The post holder will be required to work with minimal supervision to meet deadlines. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
