Research Associate in the theory of time dependent metamaterials

Location: South Kensington Campus (On-site)

Job Summary

An opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate (at the post-doctoral level – or equivalent) to work with Professor John Pendry, funded by an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) programme grant. The project involves a major collaboration between Imperial College London, the University of Exeter, and King's College London, with a focus on the emerging discipline of time-dependent metamaterials. The present position is specifically concerned with the theory behind the discipline and will explore of the unique properties induced by time dependence, including quantum aspects.

The preferred starting date for this post is 1 October 2024

Duties and responsibilities

  • Engage in innovative research within the field of metamaterials, with a particular emphasis on time dependence.
  • Develop and implement theoretical models to analyse the properties of metamaterials
  • Collaborate with fellow researchers from Imperial College London, the University of Exeter, and King's College London
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals to contribute to the academic community
  • Present research findings at conferences and seminars to showcase the team's progress

Essential requirements 

  • PhD in Physics, Mathematics, a closely related field relevant, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
  • Proven experience in conducting research in metamaterials or a related field, as evidenced by a strong publication record
  • Excellent theoretical knowledge of the physical principles underlying metamaterials
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills to develop and implement theoretical models
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while effectively managing deadlines
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal
