Job Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated research technician to join our molecular diagnostic service for carrying out the day-to-day technical aspects of the work of the unit. The successful candidate will join the Department of Infectious Disease Molecular Diagnostic Unit under the supervision of the head of unit, Professor Graham Taylor and deputy head of unit, Dr Anjna Badhan. The service provides support to clinical trials with novel diagnostic assays and  through processing and viable storage of clinical samples and to the NHS through the provision of validated diagnostic assays which have been translated into routine clinical practice. The Unit is UKAS accredited.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Bench work and record keeping and all duties are required to be carried out accurately, promptly and with full regard to safe working practice in order to provide the highest possible quality of service to users.
  • Technicians are also encouraged to participate in research and development either within the unit to develop and validate new and improved methodologies or within the research department by agreement with the Unit head.

Essential requirements

  • The candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology, Biology or Virology or equivalent degree or vocational qualification
  • Experience in a medical (or veterinary) diagnostic laboratory or in biomedical research
  • Computer literacy using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Able to perform the following techniques:

PCR

Nucleic acid extraction

Sequencing

ELISA

Flow cytometry

  • Will be familiar with the biology of human viruses
  • Will be able to use their own initiative and work independently and as part of a team, as required
  • Will be familiar with the clinical implications of human viral infections

This is a fulltime, fixed term role based at St Marys Medical School Building, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and Imperial College South Kensington Campus.
