The School of Biological and Marine Sciences wish to appoint a Senior Technician to support all types of marine science fieldwork, teaching and research and be responsible for financial management and purchasing at the University’s Marine Station. This appointment presents an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with proven expertise to join a key growth area in the school supporting research, teaching ashore and afloat.
This is a unique opportunity to join the Marine Station’s technical team, providing technical support to staff and students in subject areas including marine science, marine biology conservation, surveying and coastal processes. It will include the day-to-day management of resources and facilities, maintenance, and deployment of a wide range of specialist marine science instrumentation to further our outstanding, student experience and world-class research.
The position is within a team of dedicated marine Technicians who support the teaching, learning and research of the School and Faculty across both undergraduate and postgraduate disciplines. You will be supporting, demonstrating and enabling students and staff in one-to-one and whole group settings, maintaining and developing scientific facilities as well as ensuring that health and safety procedures are followed. Working closely with colleagues, you will be expected to share your knowledge with others, helping them to develop their ideas and fulfilling their academic potential.
You will need a suitable commercially endorsed qualification for the operation of the small craft operating up to 20 miles from port. The role will require the use of risk assessment and safe systems of work in the management of safety, and the coding and legal requirements of small commercial vessel. The post will at times require some unsociable working hours, including occasional weekends and short stays away from home. To achieve this both in-house and external training will be provided to ensure competence and currency.
The additional primary function of the role is to provide financial support for all Marine Station purchasing via online ordering and management of stores facility. You will be required to procure items and maintain stock levels for the Marine Station. Effectively liaise between with relevant bodies and groups, both internal and external to the University and companies supplying services and goods.
You will be proactive in your approach to improving and developing yourself and the service you provide, showing personal initiative and good judgement when faced with complex problems.

A current full driving licence (manual transmission) is essential as you will be driving University of Plymouth vehicles (including a 17 seat minibus). This role is also subject to health surveillance with our Occupational Health team.
