Research Software Engineers
The University of Exeter Research Software and Analytics Group, consisting of Research Software Engineers (RSEs), Research Data Scientists and Research Data Stewards, supports cutting-edge research across the university, improving reproducibility and bolstering impact. RSEs make a vital contribution to the university’s research portfolio by designing and developing software tools of a professional standard to address real-world challenges spanning the spectrum of computational and social science.
Every RSE in the team is a member of the academic community and collaborates with researchers across the university to create and extend software that facilitates and embodies research in a readable, reliable and reproducible fashion. A Junior RSE would be provided with the opportunity to develop expertise in professional software development practices, alongside domain-specific knowledge, through on-the-job and formal training, enabling them to actively contribute to the research process and prepare for progression to RSE within a few years.
About you
Successful applicants will be aspiring software developers with programming competency and a commitment to developing new expertise. You should have demonstrable experience of writing software, supplemented by an understanding of the importance of best practices in software development and a proven aptitude for computational thinking. This experience could have been acquired working in industry or via a master’s degree that required significant use of computer programming and software engineering. Prior experience of contributing to research projects through collaboration with academic researchers is desirable.
About the Research Software and Analytics Group
You will join a rapidly growing team of dedicated, friendly and enthusiastic technical professionals with a diverse set of interests and backgrounds. We value collaboration, respect and an openness to innovative practises and ways of working. We adopt a flexible, hybrid working style with some home working. Every member of the team is part of the academic community and collaborates with researchers across the university to further the impact of Exeter research.
Please ensure you read the Job Description and Person Specification for full details of the role.
