UCL - Biosciences

Location: London
Salary: £43,374 to £51,860
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 9th April 2025
Closes: 7th May 2025
Job Ref: B02-08632

About us

The Division of Biosciences at UCL is one of the world's foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the groups of Prof. Nazif Alic and Prof. Linda Partridge at the UCL Institute of Healthy Ageing, a centre of excellence for research on the biology of ageing and ageing-related disease.

You will join a collaborative and innovative team studying the plasticity of adult physiology and lifespan in the fruit fly to work on a project focused on nutrition, nutrient signalling and physiological programming.

About the role

As Research Fellow, you will investigate the role of dFoxO and TORC1 in nutritional programming of adult physiology and lifespan, extending our recent work on the topic (Martínez Corrales et al. Nature Aging 2022, Juricic et al. Nature Aging 2022). You will use a combination of fruit fly genetics, phenotypic assays, molecular techniques, microscopy and computational approaches to determine the molecular mechanisms whereby nutritional conditions in early adulthood programme subsequent physiology, health and longevity in the fruit fly. The project will be supported by a dedicated technician. The work will be supervised jointly by Prof Nazif Alic and Prof Linda Partridge.

The post is funded by the BBSRC for 3 years in the first instance and is available to start immediately. Where appropriate, successful applicants will also be supported in applying for further independent funding, should they wish to do so.

Please note that appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis.

A job description and person specification can be accessed via the “apply” button.

If you have any queries about the role, please contact Professor Nazif Alic. If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online or have any queries about the application process, please contact the HR Administrator stating the advert reference number in the subject line.

About you

We are looking for a talented and motivated individual. You must have obtained or be about to obtain a PhD in a related field (e.g. ageing, physiology, genetics, nutrient signalling, gene regulation etc), with previous experience in fruit fly genetics and husbandry or molecular biology or similar relevant experience. You will lead your own project, generate and pursue independent research ideas, mentor and train junior scientists and supervise a technician. You should have excellent organisational skills, be extremely conscientious, take responsibility for your work, be collaborative and have a passion for scientific research. Candidates for the post should be confident working independently and committed to cultivating a collegial research atmosphere within the groups and across the institute.
