Senior Researcher in Behavioural Science and Qualitative Methods

University of Oxford - Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences

Location: Oxford
Salary: £48,235 to £54,066 per annum : Research Grade 8
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 28th March 2025
Closes: 25th April 2025
Job Ref: 178324

Applications are invited for Senior Researchers to work on research programmes, investigating the management of acute infections to prevent antimicrobial resistance under the overall supervision of Dr Sarah Tonkin-Crine. There are two full-time positions available, but part-time working at a minimum of 0.6FTE may be considered.

The first position is fixed-term for two years with the possibility of extension. The postholder will conduct interviews and surveys with patients and clinicians about their experiences of using and implementing point-of-care tests (POCT) for patients with COPD. The second position is fixed-term until 31 December 2026 with the possibility of extension. The postholder will undertake qualitative research with underserved groups in the community to understand how people manage acute infections, access primary care and understand antibiotic use.

The successful applicants will play a pivotal role in leading qualitative and behavioural studies in large programmes of work. Responsibilities will include managing research studies independently, collecting and analysing qualitative data, writing publications (as lead author) and grant applications and providing expert advice on qualitative methods and behavioural science to other members of the group.

The post holders will also work closely with IRAC team members to develop new projects within the group and establish their own area of research. They will be expected to work with a high level of independence in reviewing the literature, undertaking data analysis and preparing grant applications and papers for publication. They will be expected to supervise other members of the team and to represent the research group at conferences and meetings.

You will hold a PhD/DPhil in a health science subject such as clinical medicine, health psychology or sociology (or be near completion), together with relevant experience. You will demonstrate the ability to manage and deliver research studies from start to end, as well as have the ability to work independently and to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders.

You will be based in the Gibson Building, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Radcliffe Primary Care Building, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG as your normal place of work but you will be able to agree a pattern of regular remote working with your line manager.

The first position is funded by the Ineos Oxford Institute and the second position is funded by the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit.

Whilst the role is a grade 8 (£48,235 - £54,066 p.a.) position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at grade 7 (£38,674 - £46,913 p.a.) with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at the interview or appointment, where appropriate.

For further information or to discuss the post please contact Sarah Tonkin-Crine: sarah.tonkin-crine@phc.ox.ac.uk
