Oriel College seeks to appoint a part-time Stipendiary Lecturer in English from October 2025 to end of March 2026, to cover a period of sabbatical leave, with responsibility for teaching in the period 1830 to the present. Candidates should have completed their doctorate or made substantial progress towards completion, and should be equipped to undertake tutorial teaching and associated duties.
The person appointed will work with the Main Organising Tutor for English; Dr Kathryn Murphy and will be expected to undertake teaching for an average of 6 hours per week during term time to undergraduates at Oriel College. The Lecturer must be able to teach Prelims Paper 1b (Approaches to Literature), Paper 3 (Literature in English, 1830-1910), and Paper 4 (Literature in English 1910-present). The Lecturer will assist with general administration, the pastoral care of undergraduates, Open Days and outreach activities.
The basic stipend will be according to the Senior Tutors’ Committee recommended scale, currently £16,569 to £18,308 (pro rata) per annum. Contributory membership of USS (the Universities Superannuation Scheme) is also offered. The Lecturer will be entitled to free lunch and dinner in the Senior Common Room and a research allowance of £987 per year (pro rata).
