Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield
The Technical Team in the School of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences supports a wide and diverse range of subjects including Biosciences, Pharmacy, Sports Science, Psychology, and Geography, Environment and Planning. Highly skilled technical staff are organized into small specialist teams, who work together alongside academic and research staff.
Main duties and responsibilities
The successful applicant will be responsible for the preparation of materials (including chemicals) and equipment for Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry teaching sessions, as well as clearing and safely disposing of materials after sessions are complete. You will be required to maintain laboratories in a clean and tidy state, as well as ensure that equipment is in good condition, safe to use and calibrated as necessary. You will also contribute to the maintenance of equipment inventories and ensure that health and safety practices are implemented and observed.
You will have contact with both undergraduate and postgraduate students at all stages of their learning.
Skills and experience required
An articulate and good communicator, both written and verbally. You will be a team player, as well as showing initiative and being able to work independently when necessary. You will be able to explain and demonstrate techniques to staff, students and visitors, and also be able to follow detailed instructions comprehensively.
You will be flexible and adaptable to team and workload requirements, with a proactive approach which is methodical with an attention to detail. Good IT, numeracy and timekeeping with ability to work to deadlines are all essential.
You must be able to carry out work involving manual handling, and have a willingness to learn new skills and undertake professional qualifications, where appropriate. You will be a reliable member of the team and able to assist in other related laboratories as the need arises.
Practical experience of working in a pharmaceutics laboratory would be an advantage in a technical role, as will knowledge and experience of Pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical sciences or aseptic techniques.
Qualifications required
Educated with a minimum of A levels or equivalent qualification in a science subject, preferably chemistry or science area, or proven work experience in an equivalent laboratory environment.
A numeracy qualification GCSE Grade D or above, or equivalent.
