Applications are invited for Research Fellow position within the School of Engineering at the University of Southampton, working with the BBSRC-funded Environmental Biotechnology Innovation Centre (https://ebicentre.co.uk/). The work will involve laboratory-based development of mixed-culture fermentation of un-sterilised putrescible organic wastes using engineering biology and bioprocess engineering tools. This includes manipulating or modifying specific microbes in a consortium to increase interactions and enhance metabolic output by redirecting metabolic fluxes to maximise efficiency; and/or designing robust consortia with high tolerance for different types of environmental stress through adaptive laboratory evolution, along with knowledge of high-throughput analysis to understand community dynamics. The results will be written up as project deliverables and publications.
The post will be held in the Environmental Lab of University of Southampton, with close collaboration with leading researchers in other institutions especially Cranfield University. Lab visits and placements to other organisations are therefore expected within the project duration.
