Campus Health and Safety Manager

The role

Campus Division manages and operates the UK’s 11th largest Higher Education estate, supporting 30,000 staff and students across 340+ buildings and extensive outdoor spaces. Our team of 900 skilled professionals—including tradespeople, engineers, and administrators—ensures our campus runs smoothly and efficiently.

The Campus Health, Safety, and Quality Assurance Team provides expert guidance to help the division comply with University policies, industry standards, and UK health and safety laws. We collaborate closely with the University's central Safety and Health Services and other departments to maintain a consistent and high-quality approach to safety and compliance.

We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to play a key role in ensuring a consistent and proactive approach to health and safety planning across the University’s estate. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape safety strategy, drive compliance, and lead a dedicated team within one of the UK’s largest higher education estates.

What will you be doing?

Reporting to the Head of Campus Health, Safety & Quality Assurance, you will provide both strategic and operational leadership, ensuring compliance with legislation, industry standards, and University policies. You will work closely with stakeholders, managers, and contractors to identify and manage risks, update the University Risk Register, and implement best practices. Additionally, you will collaborate with the Quality Assurance Manager to align safety processes with divisional quality standards.

In addition, you will:

• Develop and implement health and safety management systems, policies, and improvement programs
• Lead and manage the Campus Health & Safety Team, ensuring effective oversight of safety processes
• Monitor compliance, conduct audits, and drive continuous improvement in health and safety performance
• Investigate incidents, report findings, and implement corrective actions to mitigate future risks
• Engage with stakeholders, managers, and contractors to promote a culture of safety and best practice
• Report on safety strategy and KPIs, ensuring alignment with University-wide objectives
• Deputise for the Head of Campus Health, Safety & Quality Assurance when required

You should apply if

You have:

• NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent qualification) in occupational health and safety
• Strong expertise in health and safety systems, services, and processes
• Extensive experience in health and safety management within large, complex organisations (e.g., Higher Education or Facilities Management)
• Proven experience developing and implementing safety management systems, policies, audits, and improvement programs
• Expertise in incident investigation, reporting, and corrective action planning
