Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Engineer within UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
The Materials Design and Processing Group (led by Dr Mert Celikin) at UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering is currently seeking a research engineer, interested in developing a fundamental understanding in metal binder-jetting technology for biomedical applications, to work on an exciting project towards Additive Manufacturing of Stainless-Steel tools for biomedical applications. The post is available from March 2025 (or earlier) for 2 years. The ideal candidate should have a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry with research experience in low-temperature additive manufacturing (i.e. Metal Binder Jetting) or metal injection moulding (MIM). The researcher work is funded by I-Form Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (www.i-form.ie) through Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland (formerly Science Foundation Ireland) and I-Form industry partner Stryker.
Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology accelerates design freedom crucial for the biomedical applications. Low temperature AM processes including metal Binder-Jetting may allow better microstructural homogeneity, higher cost-efficiency and less safety concerns. This project will focus on building a fundamental understanding of processing and post-processing steps to have superior control of final mechanical performance. Research Engineer will be part of the team working on the use of metal binder-jetting technology for biomedical applications. The research engineer will join a vibrant team of researchers with complementary backgrounds in metallurgy, polymer processing, medical device design and medicine.
Fixed salary: €53,770 per annum
