Postdoctoral Research Associate/Graduate Research Assistant

This role offers the opportunity for hybrid working – some time on Exeter St Luke's campus and some from home.

This new full time post is available from immediately on a fixed term basis until 31 March 2027.

Summary of the role  

The Faculty wishes to recruit a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) or a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to support the work of PenTAG. This NIHR funded post is available immediately to end of March 2027 and may be extended subject to renewal of funding. The successful applicant will support HTA projects for NICE and other agencies, working on high profile and high impact appraisals directly influencing pharmaceutical and medical device policy in England and elsewhere. This will include working with multidisciplinary teams of systematic reviewers, epidemiologists, statisticians, health economists, information specialists and clinical experts in producing responsive, high-quality outputs under strict deadlines. Knowledge of principles of evidence-based medicine and fundamentals of health economics is important. 

The post will include training and development opportunities to build knowledge and skills in HTA. This will include building experience with the appraisal of health economic evaluations, including critique and manipulation of economic models such as identification of alternative inputs; and development of economic models de novo using, for example, R and/or Microsoft Excel (including VBA). As part of this post, you will have an important role in generating evidence about the cost effectiveness of emerging health technologies including drugs and medical devices and have a real impact on the treatments available to patients within the NHS.

GRAs are appointed at Grade E spine point 25, whereas PDRAs are appointed at Grade E spine point 26. Please read the job descriptions to understand the differences between the roles.

About you

The successful applicant will be someone enthusiastic about health economic evaluation of health technologies who wants to develop their knowledge and skills while having a direct impact on patients’ lives. There is a substantial training element to this post, though applicants would be expected to understand the fundamentals of health economic theory and evaluation.

Applicants should have excellent communication skills, including writing skills, the ability to explain technical detail to a non-technical audience, and be willing to ask questions and voice their opinions.
