Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sport Science.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position to work on a project investigating how sensory feedback can improve prosthetic control in different stages of prosthesis use, as part of Dr Dupan’s research group and funded through an SFI-IRC Pathway Fellowship.

Even the most advanced prosthetic devices currently on the market do not provide sensation. This means prosthetic users do not receive information about the objects they interact with, or the position of their own hand. The project will investigate how the role of sensory feedback changes from initial motor learning to long-term use, creating a computational model on how different aspects of the feedback (e.g. amplitude, timing, consistency of use) impact motor learning and control. As such, the project will build on knowledge from neuroscience, physiology, biomedical engineering, and computer science. Through the project, we hope to improve the understanding of the impact of sensory feedback, create novel feedback strategies for prosthetic control, and quantify how feedback changes prosthetic behaviour.

The research will be conducted in the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sport Science in University College Dublin, Ireland, and is affiliated with the UCD Centre for Biomedical Engineering. Dr Dupan’s group has strong links to biomedical engineering, cognitive neuroscience, and physiology groups both locally and internationally. The successful candidate will have opportunities for wider collaborations and the learning of new skills.

Interested candidates should submit their CVs and cover letters describing their background and research interests and how they align with the project and the broader interests of the Dupan Lab. It is hoped that the candidate will start around March/April 2025. There is a possibility of extending this 18-month post by up to 9 months.

Salary Range: €44,847 - €51,313 per annum

Appointment in the above range will be dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Closing date: 12:00 noon (local Irish time) on the 24th of February 2025.

Applications must be submitted by the closing date and time specified. Any applications which are still in progress at the closing time of 12:00 noon (Local Irish Time) on the specified closing date will be cancelled automatically by the system. UCD are unable to accept late applications.

UCD do not require assistance from Recruitment Agencies. Any CVs submitted by Recruitment Agencies will be returned.

The PD1 position is intended for early-stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.

Prior to application, further information (including the application procedure) should be obtained from the Work at UCD website: www.ucd.ie/workatucd/jobs
