Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Assistant within UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science.
Prior to application, further information (including application procedure) should be obtained from the Work at UCD website: www.ucd.ie/workatucd/jobs
The WheatHealth project aims to advance sustainable disease control strategies for wheat by exploring plantpathogen-microbiome interactions. Through phenotypic analysis, soil and environmental monitoring, highthroughput sequencing, and network association studies, the project will examine how environmental factors and host genotype shape the wheat microbiome and influence resistance to Fusarium Head Blight (FHB). It will also assess the impact of biological control agents on disease suppression. With the EU Green Deal driving a reduction in chemical fungicides, WheatHealth will provide key insights into leveraging plant and microbial biodiversity for improved crop resilience.
The Research Assistant will contribute to both laboratory and field research. Responsibilities include coordinating field sampling, propagating wheat landrace seeds for glasshouse trials, and assisting with DNA and RNA extraction. The role also involves managing procurement, supporting postdoctoral researchers and PhD students, and ensuring smooth project execution. Additional duties include preparing reports, presenting findings at lab meetings and national conferences, and completing research integrity training. This position offers hands-on experience in plant health and molecular biology, making it ideal for someone passionate about sustainable agriculture and crop disease management.
