Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 - Marine ecology to underpin designation of Marine Protected Areaswithin UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science.
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are a vital and proven tool in halting and reversing the decline in biodiversity and establishing a viable long-term equilibrium in our seas and oceans. Ireland has a maritime area of approximately 470,000 km2, one of the largest in Europe. At present only approximately 9% of that area is designated for spatial protection through provisions under the EU Birds and Habitats Directives, but Ireland has firmly committed to expand its network of MPAs to meet a target of 30% coverage by 2030. This means that there is a substantial amount of exciting ecological work to be done to inform and help design and expand Ireland’s MPA network.
