Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 21st January 2025
Closes: 18th February 2025

About the role:

This post is based in the Department of Infectious Disease in South Kensington. The post will be jointly supervised between Dr Aran Singanayagam, Dr Anand Shah and Professor Sebastian Johnston. This is an 18-month post (with potential to extend) funded by the MRC, to study mechanisms of susceptibility to respiratory viral infection in the chronic respiratory condition bronchiectasis.

We are aiming to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated research technician with a strong background in cell culture techniques and an interest in host-pathogen interactions, who wishes to expand their research portfolio. You will join an exciting multidisciplinary group with expertise in immunology and molecular microbiology. The post holder will be required to work both individually and as a team and may be required to teach more junior members of the laboratory. You should integrate with the group with a cooperative, enthusiastic and flexible approach.

What you would be doing:

You will be supporting research that combines primary human cell culture with molecular and virological techniques to understand how the innate immune response is dysregulated in bronchiectasis (a common chronic lung condition that is poorly understood). You will be based within the groups of Dr Aran Singanayagam and Dr Anand Shah in the Centre for Bacterial Resistance Biology (CBRB), and in the Section of Molecular Microbiology within the Department of Infectious Diseases (DoID) at Imperial College London. You will support research that addresses questions on how the innate immune response is dysregulated in bronchiectasis and define which are the key immune and structural cells involved. You will also be expected to perform routine work in the laboratory to help support its overall structure and research. You will have clear and timely communication with the researchers within the group and with others in the Department. You will attend and actively contribute to relevant workshops, lab meetings, research seminars and conferences in Imperial and the wider community. You may supervise undergraduate students.

What are we looking for:

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with experience in cell culture and interests in infection biology. Applicants must demonstrate as part of their application, how they meet the essential criteria required of the post.

  • Hold a Masters degree in immunology/infection/biomedical sciences or a related field (desirable)
  • Hold a upper second or first class degree in immunology/infection/biomedical sciences or a related field (essential)
  • have experience of performing research using techniques relevant to host pathogen interactions including significant experience in cell culture.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to contribute to innovation in bacterial infection biology.
  • Training in complementary aspects of infection biology in the Centre for Bacterial Resistance Biology.
  • The opportunity to collaborate with other researchers in the Groups of Dr Aran Singanayagam and Dr Anand Shah.
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
