About the Role:

OSGA and St Antony’s College invite applications for an Associate Professor in Global and Area Studies. This permanent role, subject to a five-year review, offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the MPhil in Global and Area Studies, a unique multidisciplinary programme established in 2021.

The successful candidate will conduct internationally excellent research, teach and supervise graduate students, and take on academic administrative responsibilities. As Director of the MPhil programme, you will teach core and optional modules, deliver research methods training, and supervise master’s and doctoral students.

Your research should explore regionally contextualised social science issues of global importance, using comparative or transnational approaches, and address regions covered by OSGA, with a preference for Africa, China, Japan, Latin America, and/or the Middle East. Research on transnational topics such as democratization, migration, gender, health, the environment, or trade is particularly welcomed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct high-impact research and publish in leading journals.
  • Teach and supervise graduate students.
  • Direct the MPhil in Global and Area Studies programme.
  • Secure research funding and foster collaborations.
  • Contribute to the academic administration of OSGA and St Antony’s College.

About You:

Applicants should have:

  • A doctorate in a relevant social science field (completed by 1 October 2025).
  • An outstanding publication record and research programme.
  • Expertise in comparative/transnational issues and social science research methods.
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level and the ability to supervise high-achieving, diverse students.
  • A commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Experience in securing research funding, supervising graduate students, or engaging with non-academic stakeholders is desirable.

Location and Benefits:

The post-holder will be based at OSGA, 11 Bevington Road, Oxford, and will be a non-tutorial fellow of St Antony’s College. Benefits include a housing allowance (£2,871 p.a.) and an additional £3,155 p.a. payable upon the award of the title of Full Professor. Generous sabbatical leave and flexibility to balance teaching and research are also available.

Key Dates:

  • Closing Date: 3rd March 2025 (noon, UK time)
  • Interviews: 2nd May 2025 (in person, Oxford)
  • Start Date: 1st October 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter

How to Apply:

For full details and to apply, click the 'Apply' button above. (Vacancy ID: 177748) Applications should include a letter of application, CV, and contact details for three referees.

We are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse academic environment. Applications are particularly encouraged from women, black, and minority ethnic candidates, who are underrepresented in academic posts at Oxford.

If, for any reason, a candidate has taken a career break or has had an atypical career and wishes to disclose this in your application, the selection committee will take this into account, recognising that research output may be reduced as a result.

Applications from those at an early, mid, or advanced career stage are welcome.
