Annual Leave: 25 days plus standard public holidays and an additional 4 days including the closure of our office between Christmas and New Year

Main duties and responsibilities 

The School of Physics, Engineering and Computer Science is looking for a Senior Technical Officer to join our team and support the school in a range of functions. This will include the preparation of materials and equipment, mainly involving support for specialist techniques in the electronics area for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Senior Technical Officer will demonstrate the safe use of testing kit, technical equipment, and specialist skills to all groups of staff and students, providing specialist and general assistance to students to enable them to carry out their work. In addition, the successful candidate will also be required to assist in consultancy work and research, contributing to the continual development of new practical sessions for teaching and short courses, whilst having a thorough knowledge of the relevant safety procedures, ensuring procedures are adhered. Complying with all Health and Safety regulations, both national and local. 

Skills and experience required

You will have proven professional experience of managing and/or maintaining an efficient technical operation, alongside experience and knowledge of electronics platforms (such as Arduino, microcontrollers, and FPGA) to include programming of these devices. This role will require you to have specialist skills in some or all the following areas: electronic system building and testing, developing new products through concept to manufacture and maintaining test equipment related to the testing and analysis of systems.

You will hold a good basic understanding of electronic systems, the design, build and experience of testing methods and techniques and an up-to-date knowledge of current legislation and health and safety regulations relevant to this area. Knowledge and experience of software installation, configuration and supporting PCs running both Windows and Linux is essential for this role. 

You will have the flexibility and adaptability to contribute to team and workload requirements, as well as a high standard of accuracy, neatness and safe practice including good time management and the ability to prioritise tasks and work to deadlines. Good communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with staff and students, with a client-oriented approach to work is essential. You must have good demonstration and training skills and a commitment to supporting students to work safely and effectively with a wide range of equipment. 

Qualifications required

Educated with A Levels or equivalent qualification, or proven experience is essential.
