Wishes to recruit a full-time rotational week-day porter:

  • Rotational shift pattern (day/evening/night)
  • 41.25 hours over Monday to Friday.
  • Gross annual salary circa £24,903 (pro rata)
  • Access to contributory pension scheme.
  • 25 days annual holiday.
  • Reporting to the Head Porter and responsible for physical security, porter’s lodge duties, daily maintenance tasks, driving and student safety.
  • Desirable qualifications: clean, current driving licence; computer literate; basic first aid qualification.

Job title: Weekly Day/Night Shift Porter (Rotational).

Work location: Shoichi Hall and all Teikyo University of Japan in Durham (TUID) sites from 7 am to 3 pm; 3 pm to 11 pm; 11 pm to 7 am (Monday to Friday).

Responsible to: Bursar, through the Head Porter and Utilities Manager.

Specific Responsibilities:

Responsible to the Head Porter and Utilities Manager for:

  1. Responding with urgency to all fire and medical emergencies.
  2. Ensuring that all noise levels (bedrooms/corridors/entrance/halls) are kept to an acceptable level in both Halls of Residence throughout the evening/night shift.
  3. Answering queries from students, staff and members of the public, and giving assistance wherever possible and advice as required.
  4. Carrying out an irregular pattern of security patrolling (internal/external) across the whole TUID estate, including regularly monitoring the CCTV security system.
  5. Reporting, rectifying and recording any faults noted by him/her or others, in the TUID buildings and installations and informing the Head Porter prior to going off shift.
  6. Driving the company minibuses on official journeys (mainly local) as required during the shift.
  7. Shift programme, actioning the daily task schedule sheet in accordance with the Head Porter's instructions and recording all day/night shift events accurately and legibly in the Porters' Lodge diary.
  8. Maintaining reliable communications (telephone landline and mobile) for on-call emergencies throughout his/her shift.
  9. Security checks of the Lafcadio Hearn Cultural Centre and West Court Flats at intervals throughout the day/night shift.
  10. Changing to the day shift in non-term time to complete the TUID vacation works services repair programme.
  11. Ensuring that appropriate TUID and relevant College staff are updated on all student emergencies (unless of a minor nature).
  12. Acting as Fire Marshal whenever the situation arises and ensuring that all residents are directed to the Fire Assembly Point (FAP) during an emergency.
  13. Checking the occupancy register for both Halls of Residence at the beginning of each shift.

  14. Ensuring that the pantries, computer room, fitness suite and relaxation lounges are all used appropriately.

Essential Qualifications/Standards:

  1. A clean, current driving license as porters are required to drive company cars/minibuses for student’s trips and for various activities, plus transports needs for staff, i.e: business trips, airport pick-ups, etc...
  2. Flexibility: occasionally, the portering staff are required to operate outside Durham; shift changes also become necessary at intervals due to sickness, leave cover.
  3. A very positive interest in students' welfare.
  4. A basic knowledge of first aid and fire marshal duties.
  5. Computer literate and a courteous, precise telephone manner.
  6. Basic DIY skills for a diversity of domestic support task.
  7. A very smart appearance at all times in compliance with the University.
