About the School / Service

The Health, Safety, and Wellbeing (HSW) department is dedicated to supporting and guiding our Schools and Services, with a simple goal: to keep people safe. With 1,300 staff and 44,000 students, there are always new challenges to address. Positioned within the People & Culture service, we serve all three campuses, supporting six Schools and 19 Services. We offer advice and guidance to ensure all activities are managed safely and oversee Occupational Health services to promote the health and wellbeing of our people.

To ensure full integration of Health, Safety, and Wellbeing (HSW) into our schools and services, the Health, Safety, and Fire Manager will be part of the HSW team. This role will report to the Director of Health, Safety, and Wellbeing, with a dotted line to the Director of Estates and Facilities.

The Projects & Estates Development team handles all development activities across our large estate. With ongoing maintenance projects and various development initiatives, the team is constantly involved in exciting projects—ranging from creating larger teaching spaces and refurbishing offices to building new facilities. A prime example is the Stratford Campus Redevelopment, which will include 650 student accommodation rooms, new amenities, and a 4,912sqm academic building with lecture theatres and teaching rooms.

You will act as a conduit of information between the estates and development team, contractors and the HSW Business Partners & HSW Champions in the schools and services. With a dotted line to the Director of Estates and Facilities you will also provide support to the Estates and Facilities Service and the wider organisation. You will be visible in both presence and support, enabling excellence in HSW and Fire Safety. You will help to drive a Zero Harm culture, assist in the implementation of the HSW Management System and to identify areas of improvement.
