The School of Education (SoE) is one of the UK’s leading centres for educational research and teaching. In the REF 2021, 100 percent of our research was rated as internationally excellent in terms of impact. With a large and innovative portfolio of national and internationally focused postgraduate taught and research programmes, it is extremely well placed to thrive over the coming years. A 2023 OFSTED inspection re-affirmed SoE’s status as an ‘outstanding’ and ‘good’ provider of initial teacher education and training and it is currently enacting ambitious plans for the development of both its research and teaching programmes. We welcome colleagues who seek to promote and maintain a collegial working atmosphere and academically stimulating environment that will be attractive to and supportive of fellow academic and professional service staff and research students.

The SoE hosts the Centre for Research in Language and Literacies, a thriving group which brings together researchers interested in writing, dialogue, vocabulary, and literacies in digital contexts. The Centre has a particular focus on dialogic and multilingual approaches, the use and development of language at school and university, and the teaching and learning of foreign/additional languages in diverse educational settings.

The role

We are seeking to appoint an Associate Professor or Professor of language education to play a leading role in the Centre for Research in Language and Literacies. Whilst we are particularly interested in researchers with expertise in cognitive language learning, L2 writing or educational technology, we would be pleased to receive applications from researchers working within the broad field of language teaching and learning.

The role will involve design, delivery and production of teaching and learning material for a range of core postgraduate modules within our campus MEd TESOL programme. You will work with Professor Annabel Watson (SoE Director of Education and Student Experience) and the wider TESOL team to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the MEd programme in accordance with the Faculty’s education strategy.

We are looking for a leading international figure with the ability to attract world-class academics and research students to their research groups. Applicants will be innovative researchers with a strong track record of research funding and international quality publications as well as other esteem indicators.

You will have experience of making significant contribution to the development and clarification of research strategy for your subject area and will contribute to our educational programmes and to the overall student experience.

The role is available from 1st September 2025 on a permanent basis.

Please ensure you read the Job Descriptions and Person Specifications for full details of these roles.

What we can offer you

  • Freedom (and the support) to pursue your intellectual interests and to work creatively across disciplines to produce internationally exciting research.
  • Support teams that understand the University wide research and teaching goals and partner with our academics accordingly.
  • An Innovation, Impact and Business directorate that works closely with our academics providing specialist support for external engagement and development.
  • A beautiful campus set in the heart of stunning Devon.
