Middlesex University’s Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries is seeking a skilled and dedicated Senior Technician (Animation) to join our technical team. This post is essential to supporting related programmes, providing hands-on, industry-informed learning experiences to our students.
As the Senior Technician (Animation), you will lead technical instruction within the animation specialism and play a vital role in the teaching team. You will work closely with academic staff to ensure students gain practical, real-world experience in animation, including 3D and computer generated (CG) animation, traditional 2D animation, and stop-motion techniques.
Responsibilities include running workshops, overseeing technical facilities, and supporting the operational needs of the animation programme to deliver industry-standard skills to our students. We are looking for a strong communicator and mindful collaborator who can explain complex technical information clearly and passionately.
Experience in supporting students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and skill levels within their creative workflows is essential for successful delivery. Knowledge of health and safety best practices, particularly in managing technical areas and studios, is also crucial.
You should be proficient in several relevant software applications, such as Maya, Blender, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Houdini, Toon Boom, TV Paint, Dragon frame, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and more. With a creative mindset and practical skills in both analogue and digital animation techniques, you’ll have expertise in animation software and hardware maintenance, studio and equipment upkeep, and an understanding of VFX, XR, and other emerging technologies.
Key Responsibilities include, Collaborating with the academic team to deliver technical content that meets the needs of students, the industry, and the university, leading workshops and demonstrations covering various specialism related techniques, managing the animation lab, ensuring equipment maintenance, health and safety compliance, and efficient resource coordination, contributing to the strategic direction and technical management of the specialism.
