We are looking for skilled designers, artists, and researchers to join us in beautiful, subtropical Southeast China. The Institute of Creativity and Innovation (ICI) is a dual-degree institute founded by Xiamen University (XMU) and the University for the Creative Arts (UCA). We’re located on XMU’s Zhangzhou campus, which boasts a park-like atmosphere, with mountains on one side and Amoy Bay on the other. It’s a short commute to beautiful beaches or the city of Xiamen, the multicultural centre of Southeast China.
Our Lecturers/Senior Lecturers have a deep understanding of subject-specific expertise combined with the ability to engage and inspire students.
We have multiple openings, and these will be permanent contracts. UCA offers a competitive compensation package, which includes:
We are offering positions in teaching practice-focused modules that support students in developing technical skills in digital media while understanding their practice in relation to theory and context. We utilise an innovative teaching approach, fostering experimentation and combining lectures and seminar discussions with creative workshops and tutorials that guide students in considering the theoretical and contextual relevance of their creative works.
All units are designed to help students develop their communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and innovation skills, while fostering compassionate intelligence. We expect our students to become independent learners, applying these skills to areas such as still and moving images, animation, sound, interactive and hybrid digital practices, creative coding, game design, 3D modelling, and emerging tools like extended reality (AR/VR/MR) and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as other fields where they can push the boundaries of digital media arts.
It is essential that you have at least two years' experience teaching within higher education in a relevant subject area. Ideally, you will have a PhD in a relevant area, or be able to demonstrate equivalent professional experience.
Active research and ongoing professional practice in areas such as extended reality (AR/VR/MR), artificial intelligence (AI), 3D modelling, game design, immersive and emerging technologies, interactivity, and/or animation is essential. As part of the role, you will be required to teach technology-driven art and design workshops using, for example, Unity, TouchDesigner, Blender, and Unreal Engine. Please state in your cover letter which technical workshops you would be able to deliver.
By joining ICI, you will become part of our international community of designers, artists, architects, and researchers involved in visual arts, environmental design, visual communication design, and new media. Our educators participate in pioneering projects and teaching methodologies, applying them through research and mentoring practices.
We are committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity within our teaching and working environments.
ICI is committed to achieving 50/50 gender balance in its staff. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.
If you would like an informal chat about the role before applying, or any aspect of living and working in China, please contact Francesc Marti Perez by email at Francesc.Marti@uca.ac.uk, providing your contact details.
