Research Associate in Synthetic Biology

Contract: Full time, fixed term for 3 years

About the role:

Are you an experienced Synthetic Biologist?

Sarkisyan lab is looking for a postdoctoral scientist (Research Associate) to join the team as a Synthetic Biologist.

We are a team of six based at Imperial College London and the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences. We love seeing our work going all the way from basic science discoveries to real-life technology or a product. We are interested in understanding how to design plant responses and development, and in the next three years we aim to progress towards creating plants with various designer traits.

In the last several years, we mainly worked on engineering bioluminescence in plants (https://light.bio/), and understanding structure-function relationship in proteins (https://www.nature.com/articles/nature17995).

Our current focus is on applying synthetic biology to design plants with agricultural and aesthetic applications.

What you would be doing:

Main responsibilities:

• To plan and carry out research
• To write and publish the results
• To form working relationships with other members of the group
• To assist others and co-supervise students when required
• To contribute to the development and maintenance of the group’s experimental or computational infrastructure as appropriate

What we are looking for:

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual with:

Essential:

• Experience in bioengineering, including DNA design and assembly
• Programming skills
• PhD or similar industry experience
• One first-author publication on bioengineering in a peer-reviewed journal

Desirable:

• Experience in plant biology
