About the role:
This position of Research Assistant/Associate is part of a large project funded by the European Research Council, whose goal is the development of new theory for the ‘intermediate strain’ turbulence regime whose physics have remained unexplored. Understanding this regime is critical for the development of novel turbulence models in various processes of the energy, transportation and process sectors.
What you would be doing:
You will be part of a team with Dr. Steiros and two PhD students, all working on this project. You will either perform direct numerical simulations or wind tunnel experiments (Particle Image Velocimetry, Hot Wire Anemometry) of fundamental turbulent flows (homogenous turbulence, wake flows, boundary layers) in statistically evolving conditions where mean strain is significant but not excessive. The turbulence cascade dynamics will be analysed using advanced theoretical tools (e.g. Karman-Howard-Monin-Hill equations) and data-driven methodologies. The goal of the team is to identify the fundamental physical mechanisms which are at play in such turbulent cascades, and generate low-order models that describe them. The results of this study will be used to inform the new generation of turbulence models.
